Description

Shift Working and Its Risks is an online course of approximately 30-45 minutes for shift workers, including night workers, and the supervisors and managers who design rotas.

The course has five short lessons:

  1. The body clock and fatigue: Circadian rhythm, the low points of alertness, and what fatigue does.
  2. Health effects and sleep: Short and long-term health effects, and how to sleep better in the day.
  3. Diet, caffeine and exercise: When to eat, use caffeine and exercise around shifts.
  4. Shift pattern design and safety on shift: Forward rotation, shift length, rest, safety-critical tasks at low points, and the drive home.
  5. Managing fatigue at work: Raising fatigue, fatigue risk management, and the legal context.

Every teaching page is narrated with captions and includes an interaction. Each lesson before the last ends with a knowledge check, and the last lesson closes with a 12-question assessment drawn from all five lessons (70% to pass, unlimited retakes, results by lesson) and a set of personal commitments recorded with the result.

This course covers the health and safety risks of shift work and how to manage fatigue. Working time limits sit in employment law, and your employer's rota and fatigue policies always apply. It is not medical advice.

Main sources: HSE HSG256, Managing shift work; HSE, Human factors: fatigue; Fatigue and Risk Index; Working Time Regulations 1998, regs 6, 7, 10, 11, 12; NHS, Sleep and tiredness.
