NEBOSH National Certificate in Protecting Standard Duty Premises from Terrorism

The NEBOSH National Certificate in Protecting Standard Duty Premises from Terrorism is a specialist qualification designed for health and safety professionals and other workers involved in managing premises that fall within the standard duty requirements of the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, commonly known as Martyn’s Law.

Description

The NEBOSH National Certificate in Protecting Standard Duty Premises from Terrorism is a specialist qualification designed for health and safety professionals and other workers involved in managing premises that fall within the standard duty requirements of the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, commonly known as Martyn’s Law. NEBOSH explains that standard tier premises are certain publicly accessible premises where it is reasonable to expect between 200 and 799 people may be present at the same time.

This course gives candidates a practical understanding of terrorism-related risk in publicly accessible places and helps organisations develop a more informed and proportionate approach to compliance. The qualification covers the nature of terrorism and the legal framework, identifying and monitoring potential threats, understanding terrorist threats and site vulnerabilities, implementing public protection procedures, and developing a strong security culture.

It is particularly relevant for those responsible for venues, public-facing buildings, visitor attractions, hospitality spaces, community settings, and other premises that may fall within the scope of Martyn’s Law. NEBOSH states that the qualification is intended for health and safety professionals and other workers involved in managing standard duty premises, rather than security professionals or SHE practitioners with extensive operational experience of managing security and the threat of terrorism.

For many organisations, this course provides a strong foundation in terrorism awareness training, premises security awareness, public protection procedures, and protective security thinking. It also supports the application of familiar occupational safety and health principles such as risk assessment, reasonable practicability, and coordinated action between duty holders. Acadame can discuss delivery in Stoke, Derby, Manchester and Liverpool, onsite nationwide, and through our managed service partner network for employers looking for local options.

Assessment

The qualification is assessed by one 30-minute online multiple-format assessment. NEBOSH explains that “multiple format” includes question types such as multiple choice, multiple response, ranking, categorising, and fill-in-the-blanks. The paper contains 20 questions, all of which are compulsory, and the assessment is closed book. Candidates must achieve 60% or higher to pass.

Assessments are held monthly and are available during a 24-hour window, although candidates still have only 30 minutes total to complete the paper once started. Results are normally issued within 15 working days, and successful candidates receive a qualification parchment, usually within 20 working days of confirmation of a pass.
